Product Company Review: Custom Choice Cereal

I’m sitting here with three gluten-free custom cereals, each one blended to my specifications, even down to the name. Custom Choice Cereal is really an innovative idea to help those on the gluten-free diet. The company allows anyone to choose a base for their mix, then choose out 1-11 out of 13 “ingredients,” then (get this!) pick a name for their cereal. What fun! Your customized cereal will have a designated number in case your cereal is a hit and you want to make more just like it.

Their mission is to bring taste and variety to our gluten-free breakfast bowls, enabling everyone to enjoy great -tasting gluten-free cereal. It’s only logical, with the diversity of every one’s palate, to give consumers the opportunity to create their own one-of-a-kind cereals.

I’ve now tasted my three personal cereals with my testers, and we have all concluded that this company and the concept is a hit, and beyond delicious.

As stated earlier, one can choose up to 11 of 13 ingredients, after deciding upon the base. The overall total per bag is 12 ounces, so if you choose 11 ingredients (mango, strawberry, almonds, etc.), then you’ll end up with one ounce of each with one ounce of the base, and this will be more like a yummy trail mix. The usual request for a trail breakfast cereal is 3-5 ingredients, according to Hajo, one of the owners.

In 2008, a celiac friend clued Hajo into the fact of limited flavors in the gluten-free breakfast diet. Hajo and a group of students at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School then came up with a plan—Custom Choice Cereal.
Custom Choice also has an advisory team and one member is well-known to the celiac and gluten-free arena, Dr. Stephen Wangen (author of Healthier without Wheat and The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution). Every first Wednesday of the month, Dr. Wangen answers five questions from consumers on the Custom Choice Cereal blog.

This is a company we want to see thrive, expand, and continue to service the celiac community. Their website is www.customchoicecereal.com.

We love custom choice! just watch out for how many ingredients vs. bases you choose because you WILL end up with a trail mix, not cereal, if you choose too many ingredients.

    Hi Tina,

Thanks so much for your stellar review of our custom gluten-free cereal. I am very happy to hear that you and your testers enjoyed your mixes! Just wanted to let you know that we significantly expanded our offering to 27 add-ins and the option to combine different base mixes. This results in over 2.5 billion delicious combination possibilities :-) For those who are overwhelmed by the variety we also offer proven favorite mixes.

Don’t forget: the next Q&A with Dr. Wangen is in only 2 days on December 1st!

    All the best,
    Hajo
