I apologize if my story is long-winded, however I feel strongly that this obscure manifestation of celiac disease needs more exposure.
I am male, 60 years old, 6'1, normally 170 lbs. On March 26,2007 I was diagnosed with celiac disease (ttg >200, bowel biopsy positive). What is interesting is that except for some subtle bloating and difficult large dry stools I suffered no what I would think are out of the ordinary intestinal symptoms. In August of 2006 I began complaining to my M.D. mainly of balance problems (ataxia). It was subtle at first but got progressively worse and by December 2006, I had significant double-vision (diplopic), peripheral neuropathy, and the inability to fall asleep. Finally in March an internist (aware now that my weight had dropped to 160) ordered the ttg blood work (thank god).
I immediately became, as thoroughly as I was able, gluten-free. For two years my improvement was evident (but like watching a glacier melt). In January 2009 I added dairy-free to my diet. My experience is that my rate of improvement of these neurological problems has been at least 3x faster.
I would encourage you to Google "gluten ataxia in perspective: epidemiology, genetic susceptibility and clinical characteristics" (Brain 2003, 126 685-691). This paper by Mario Hadjivassilious et al is a study of individuals similar if not identical to me. According to the paper the "mean duration of ataxia was 9.7 years. There is some hope for me.
