Having a calorie deficit can have a negative effect on your metabolism. Most people dream of eating anything that they want, without the addition of calories. As perfect as that may sound, to have such a high metabolism is not always attainable. There are certain things that we do in our daily life that can greatly affect whether we have a high or low metabolism. This is what is constantly in my mind when developing recipes
There is a difference between having a high and low metabolism. Those with a high metabolism burn through more calories in a day, while those with low metabolism do not. It is important to be able to understand what these terms mean in order to apply it to yourself, and your own body.
The first thing that comes to mind for most when thinking of a high metabolism is someone who keeps their figure but eats everything in sight. A better way to start thinking about metabolism is that it is all the chemical reactions that occur within a body. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), is defined as the total number of calories necessary to carry out daily life. We need to fuel ourselves properly each day in order to ensure we get our bodies ready for what is yet to come. For ideas on some clean eating, yet satisfying meals, you may want to check out some poultry or fish recipes to be sure you are getting the necessary protein in your diet!
This is, however, where a common misunderstanding comes into play. Lessening your calorie intake in a day is creating a calorie deficit. By creating this deficit, you are basically telling your body that you are starving, and it begins to slow down the calorie-burning process, slowing down our metabolism. Oftentimes, people cut calories to lose weight, but now you can see why that would not work as well. Our bodies are smarter than you may think!
There are more reasons than just having a calorie deficit that your metabolism is low. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, don’t exercise, get enough sleep or protein, then you are doing your body a disservice. On the flip side, if you begin incorporating those tasks into your life, then you have the ability to increase metabolism. It may take some time, but in the end, you will be living a healthier lifestyle, and having more energy.
Calories, unfortunately, have such a negative stigma these days. Everyone is counting calories and trying diets that do not give your body the necessary nutrients. I’m not saying that you should not worry about exceeding the recommended calorie count daily, but you should not get yourself in a deficit.
Stay tuned and look out for my next blog, where I will be posting on the importance of selecting nutrients for keeping and building muscle and staying lean and healthy while being able to eat clean. I will also discuss plenty of delicious food and why not be concerned with “dieting” per se. Until then, I hope this information will be helpful to you.
