Mother of 3 and new children’s author Melanie Krumrey did a very fine job in illustrating and writing the book, Bagels, Buddy and Me.
This book is her story of her son’s headaches and stomachaches leading to tests which eventually led to high antibody tests, then her and then her daughter and then even the dog Buddy improved on a gluten-free diet—one very logical handling for high antibodies to gluten.
This book is really written for a child of a fairly good reading level who’s been newly diagnosed celiac, or whose parents have determined the child is gluten intolerant. It could also be used as a good reference book for a child with gluten sensitivity.
The pictures clearly display the written words for children. I do feel it would still help to have an adult nearby for a first reading to clarify some of the terms which children most likely will not be familiar with.
This book would also be good for a child maybe undergoing tests for celiac to gain an understanding that he/she is not alone.
I feel that as a mother who went through what she experienced, to then share this to help others is only commendable.
