Mariposa Baking Company

When we come across truly fine artisan-crafted gluten-free items, it’s an absolute sigh of relief. “Quality” is a word we can associate with Mariposa Baking Company.

Biscottis, coffeecakes, tea loaves, brownies, and squares—all hand-crafted in a dedicated GF facility. All items are readily available to consumers online as well as wholesale. The storefront is the bakery, located in the historical Art Deco building in the Temescal area—Oakland, California.

These products and this company caught the eye of The Nibble, a specialty online food magazine testing over 3,000 foods per year. Mariposa was the first-ever gluten-free company to be named “Top Pick of the Week,” and the second one ever featured in the “restricted diet food” category.

Patti Furey-Crane founded this bakery after discovering she had a gluten allergy, which came soon after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Going gluten-free nearly eliminated all of her MS symptoms!

Her mission through Mariposa is “to create gluten-free baked goods that are indiscernible from the finest, high-caliber gluten-based products available.” My test team and I have concluded that Mariposa has gone beyond this. Their products surpass those of the gluten world. We have testers who are gluten eaters with no allergies, and we all enjoyed the texture, flavor, and “feel” of these extremely high-quality baked goods in our mouths and bodies.

It was a pleasure and an honor to sit and test these products. The care and quality shines through in every bite.

  1. So amazing how many diseases and physical problems can be handled with eliminating gluten from the diet! I wonder what inspired Patty to get her son off gluten. That’s why we really need to get “gluten” and “gluten-free” out there in the mainstream because people can try the gluten-free diet out even if they’re not celiac and see benefits.

  2. It’s always such a pleasure to read your reviews because they seem to tell the story of not only a celiac overcoming their dietary restrictions but also of a single moms especially (although sometimes men and couples too) making it go right to launch a gluten-free company. That in itself is enough of a reason to try a company too (of course in additional to the stellar reviews you give it).

  3. I really enjoy your food reviews. These are the kind of everyday practical helps we all need so we can be wise when buying gluten free foods. Thanks for saving me money as I go armed with extra insight into products when I head off to the grocery store.

    Angie 🙂

  4. Just wanted to share a link with you guys: . Mariposa has a Gluten-Free Sampler Club where you get gift baskets with gluten free products every month. I got this for my granddaughter as a birthday gift and she loved it!

  5. I love that you make delicious treats available to everyone, even those on restricted diets. My family and I are always looking for healthful, tasty options to the kinds of sweet treats that most people take for granted, and do a fair bit of baking at home using brown rice/almond flours. But having gourmet cakes and desserts of this level already prepared and ready – what a wonderful way to top off a healthy and nutritious dinner! Thank you!

  6. Hi, I read about the contest on Jen’s list and was so excited. My mom just found out she has celiacs disease and I’ve been searching for wonderful gluten free products for her! Hope I win the giveaway! Crossing fingers! :o)

  7. Your products look absolutely amazing! I hope to try them out and share them with the other moms in our Parents Ed class. Yum!

  8. Wow, I was surprised and over joyed at the amount of information and links provided by your site. What you share here many other site charge membership fees for, thank you very much. I enjoy making pastries and deserts and know I will enjoy trying some these recipes at home knowing I don’t have to go without.
    thank you.

  9. They’re in Oakland? Yay! My sister lives there and I visit her once a year over the holidays. I’m SO stopping by their facility! I ordered once from Mariposa and what struck me is that they tasted very gourmet, like you just knew you were eating some fine, fine food. If you’re going to splurge, definitely do so with this company:) Especially on they’re brownies!

  10. Hi Tina just wanted to say congratulations on your successes over the past year. You have become our go-to reviewer for gluten free companies. When my husband wants to try a new brand, he’s like, “Wait, let’s see what Tina Turbin has to say about it first.” LOL! Mariposa sounds extremely enchanting. Can’t wait to give it a try.

  11. Tina my husband and I are such great fans of your, I have to say. We have been reading your blog for the best year and have really enjoyed your food company reviews. They are so honest and detailed. The pictures are sometimes to-die-for! I’m very excited about trying this company, as well as a few others (I’m actually keeping a list on the refrigerator of companies you recommend!).

  12. Thanks tina so much for recommending this company. I sampled some of their products after reading your review and you were absolutely right–they were amazing! Now I’m ordering goodies for my celiac daughter’s baby shower–we’re doing a tea party and needed some sweets:)

  13. My little sister always has to order gluten-free and HATES most of the foods she’s tried lately, so I’d definitely be sharing with her!

  14. OMG this picture above looks really, really good. I’m guessing they’re brownies? I love that chocolate sauce drizzled over the brownies. Very tantalizing! It’s funny how much pictures help with a food review. I hadn’t even read this review and I was like, “OK, I’m so getting these brownies.” I don’t ever see great pictures of so-so food, you know?

  15. These look delicious – homemade with love, unlike if you bought them from a chain brand! Awesome review, thanks!

  16. That’s great that this company made a top foods of the week list even though it’s not gluten-free. I have noticed that there are so many companies out there that are truly gourmet quality and offer gluten free foods. Definitely much better than back in the day when gf food was NOT what you would “gourmet” at all.
