Kozy Shack Puddings

I was sent three products from Kozy Shack, Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Hazelnut, and Tapioca pudding—all gluten-free. The Tapioca and Chocolate Mint are sweetened with Splenda and the Hazelnut with sugar and natural flavors.

The products with the Splenda left us with an aftertaste in our mouths after the first spoonful. They were creamy as a pudding should be, but just not true to the flavor it was named after. Is this possibly due to the use of Splenda?

The Chocolate Hazelnut, even though it had no Splenda, also had some aftertaste unfamiliar to us.

I appreciate the efforts to make a low-calorie, sugar-free, gluten-free alternative to pudding, but I can’t recommend these products at this point in time. My tester and I both felt these products did not taste healthy nor all that good.

I personally would rather use agave, or even sugar, in order to have a true chocolate or tapioca pudding. Unfortunately this company did not get a favorable review from both my East and West Coast kitchens, and so we can’t recommend it as a delicious GF dessert.

  1. I tried these myself and I agree that they were a little “off,” but the chocolate mint was pretty good! I don’t really mind aftertastes though, to tell you the truth. It was pretty slight. I do appreciate your honesty though.

  2. Actually I hated the chocolate mint, definitely had an after-taste. The hazelnut one was really good though! I’m too lazy to make my own pudding. I don’t mind the off taste. You get used to it after a while. I ate these for about a month and by the end of the month they didn’t even taste funny, except as I said before, I didn’t like the chocolate mint one.

  3. Funny. I did a double-take when I read this because I’m so used to you enthusiastically recommending food companies. I admire you for giving us your honest opinion, even though I’m disappointed that these products aren’t very good.

  4. 🙁 That’s too bad. I used to be a huge fan of their rice pudding. It just tasted so wholesome! Hopefully Kozy Shack will improve these products and add a rice pudding to their gluten-free product line!

  5. I didn’t think the chocolate hazelnut was bad at all, but the chocolate mint wasn’t too good. I haven’t had the opportunity to try the tapioca. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good gf puddings? I really love chocolate pudding. I almost wish I hadn’t seen this review because now I’m dying to get my hands on some tasty puddings!

  6. Oh dear. That’s’ too bad to hear. Puddings are definitely delicious, but oddly enough, I’ve never known how to make a pudding myself. I bet British housewives have that down LOL. I hope it’s not very hard. I would very much like to try it.

  7. Hi Tina I really don’t mind the sugar free GF Kozy Shack stuff. Maybe I just don’t have very high standards LOL but I’m used to an aftertaste with sugar free foods and to me it’s better to have an aftertaste than to eat sugar! Plus the flavors themselves–the chocolate, hazelnut, mint chocolate are really delicious.

  8. Hellloooo Tina! It was really amusing to see a negative review from you LOL. I haven’t tried these but I’ll take your word for it. I’m used to you having similar opinions to mine when it comes to your reviews. Plus you do tend to choose especially good gluten-free companies, I’ve noticed. Oh well. At least Kozy Shack has a gluten-free line even if it’s not exactly the best.

  9. Hi Tina I’m really happy to get your opinions on gluten-free products. You have reviewed many products that I often see and wonder if they’re good or not. I just spotted Kozy Shack’s sugar free gluten free puddings the last I was shopping and I wasn’t ready to try them yet. Now I know to steer away from them ha ha!

  10. Hi Tina thanks for the honest input here. I think the sugar free stuff isn’t good but the regular gluten-free chocolate pudding is to die for. Love it! I highly recommend it to others and I know I’m not alone in this opinion, as my family really loves their stuff too.

  11. Hi, This is one of the few times being a kosher consumer doesnt sideline me in terms of food options, came across a brand (well my wife did) called Hateva, it’s available in kosher supermarkets in Rockland county (and I’m sure Brooklyn/Queens, etc as well) seems they use Almond milk to do the voodoo they do. Whatever they use, the stuff’s a great change from the desserts I’m normally relegated to (it also means my wife doesn’t have to make a separate dessert for me), dont know if you can find it on line and I’ve never tried Kozy Shack but after tasting this Bteva stuff I definitely won’t bother–plus it travels well too which is great for those times I’m on the road
